The following are just some of the frequently asked questions we receive here at Hutchcraft Van Service.  If you have a specific question you would like answered, just give us a call at 217-328-3333 or email us at HUTCHCRAFT@hutchcraftvanservice.com.

When is the best time to move?

If you are able to move at any time of the year, don’t wait until summer when the children are out of school.

Children adapt quickly to their new surroundings.  School provides an immediate opportunity to meet new friends and get involved in other activities.  School functions also provide the opportunity for the parents to meet others in the new community as well.

The summer months are the “peak” moving season.  In addition, the first and last few days of the month are also extra busy.

How long does a move usually take?

Many factors can affect the time required for your move, such as time it takes to load and unload, and weather conditions.  The van operator, in planning his schedule, allows extra time for any forseeable delays, but an occasional unexpected event can upset even the best-planned schedule.

Because the amount of time connected with planning a move is sometimes underestimated by the shipper, we ask that you give our agent alternate dates for loading and unloading your shipment.  This will allow you greater flexibility in making plans.

What is the estimated cost of service?

To determine the approximate cost of your move, as well as the space needed on the van for your household goods, an agency representative will conduct a household goods survey in your home.  Show the salesperson everything to be moved, specifying any items off-premises or other items to be added later.  The representative will then compute the approximate cost of your move and give you a written “estimated cost of service.”

Keep in mind that the estimate is only a price guideline.  You must pay the total charges for the services performed, the materials provided, and the valuation coverage selected based upon the tariff provisions.

What if we need to store our possessions temporarily?

If you are unable to take immediate possession of your new residence or if the van operator is unable to contact you upon delivery, arrangements can be made for your belongings to be stored at a reasonable cost until you are ready for them.

When do we need to make payment?

The van operator is obligated by law to collect the charges for your shipment (cash, cashier's check, or money order) before it can be unloaded, unless other arrangements are made in advance.

Credit card payment may be made, however, transaction arrangements must be made prior to loading day.

What about moving expensive items?

If your shipment will contain any articles of “extraordinary value,” notify your United agent before packing.  In the moving industry, items worth more than $100 per pound per article of extraordinary value.

Examples would be the following:

  • Collectibles
  • Fine China
  • Crystal
  • Art
  • Furs
  • Silver
  • Oriental rugs
