Where it all began…

During World War II, 18 year old Orin C. Hutchcraft was serving duty in Europe while his younger brother, Gerald at age 17 was working

with a local moving company in Champaign, IL.

Coming back from overseas, Orin, like many young soldiers, came back to peacetime America with not much of an idea of what to do.  Entrepreneurial Gerald was excited about his work with the

moving company.  Orin’s bank account of service pay was enough to purchase their first truck, a modified 1926 Hudson automobile with a truck bed.

They began hauling baggage for the University of Illinois students to and from the railroad station.  A year later they began making deliveries for Sears and Roebuck, and moving household goods on a regular basis.

“We were so eager for work that we would move one chair or anything else anywhere!”

-Gerald Hutchcraft

During the post-war era, America began changing into a fast growing mobile society.  A need for moving and storage was in great demand.  In 1956, the brothers became agents for United Van Lines, a relatively new carrier in the moving industry to meet the national growing demand.

In 1964, the brothers moved to their current location on North Lincoln Avenue near the newly constructed Interstate 74.  Within four years, the company’s growth was so great, they doubled their warehouse size to 16,000 sq. ft.

In the 1970’s, Orin’s son Orin III, and daughter-in-law, Kathy, along with Gerald’s sons, Gerald Jr. and Jim joined the firm in various positions.  Learning from the ground up, the sons absorbed the work ethic set forth by their fathers.  During this time Hutchcraft became well-known for its quality, service and facilities.

Top notch equipment and personnel made it a model agency for United Van Lines, which was now becoming the largest and fastest growing van line in America.

Today, the fleet consists of over 30 vehicles. Specialized equipment such as climate controlled trailers, and trucks with heavy duty lifts and gates have allowed Hutchcraft Van Service to come a long way since the modified Hudson in 1946.

Orin and Gerald retired in 1987 with the sons having taken on the challenges of new phases in the industry.  Office and Industrial relocation, Electronic and Special Products shipping, Record Storage and International relocation became additions to their core business of moving and storage.

Orin Sr.’s stance on demanding quality had earned him recognition by his peers when the Illinois Movers and

Warehouseman’s Association established the Orin C. Hutchcraft Quality Service Award in 1992.  The award is in recognition of “dedication and superior service above and beyond the call of duty…”

From their humble beginnings over 60 years ago, the company has positioned itself well to face the challenges of the next millennium in relocation services.
